The rules do not get re-applied automatically when you change the order of files. This is by design.

You should do the following:

1. Add files/folders
2. Sort by original name
3. Re-apply rules (click the Preview button)

I did that, still counts wrong. After clicking "Preview" I get an error that a lot of files are duplicates. I added 1 huge folder (add folder & drag and drop) with different sub-folders.

Edit 1:
I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I think it's my fault. I have to try several times with different ways, for example loading the files first, then rules, then the other way around. I'm sorry, that I can't explain it better. Is there a particular order when it works 100% of the time? Load files first, sort by name/new name column, load rules, apply/test, for example? Thanks!

Edit 2:
After playing aroung a little bit and writing the steps down, I came to the conclusion, that the following works:
1. Open software
2. Add folders (not drag and drop)
3. Sort "new name"
4. Load rules
5. Error message "[number] duplicate files" --> klick OK/X
6. Sort "new name"
7. Click Preview
8. Click Rename
9. Done

I there a shorter way? Thanks again.

Re: Serialize/Count files in "wrong" order?

I think your culprit is in sorting by the "New Name" column. This column is changed by the renaming rules, which then affects the sorting order, which in turn requires rules to be re-applied, this is a bit of a recursive feedback problem here.

You should try to sort by other columns, such as "Name" or "Path".

That is why I stated a different set of steps:

1. Add files/folders
2. Sort by original name (not the new name)
3. Re-apply rules (click the Preview button)

The rules can be loaded at any stage, as long as you re-apply the rules after changing the sort order, in order to update your serialization indexes.

ReNamer works in a fully predictable way. The variables are in your workflow.
