Search for given filenames and Replace them with new given filenames

Kind of like User Input section, but with two columns.

In Column A, I want to input filenames that I want to be replaced.
In Column B, I want to input their new filenames.

Is there something similar in ReNamer already or some other way to achieve this?

I basically want to drag and drop say 100 files into ReNamer. I have a list of old filenames and new filenames for 20 files.
I use the above method, and ReNamer does the renaming for the 20 files out of the 100 and the remaining filenames stay untouched.
This helps me save time on manually searching for the 20 files and then bringing them into ReNamer.

The Replace section of the toolset can technically do this, but it needs multiple items to be separated by a pipe symbol, while I have a list where the names are separated by a line break. So I'd have to spend considerable time on reformatting them for ReNamer.

For an example see "Rename multiple files using a txt file?" >>> https://www.den4b.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2867

Do that work for you?

(be sure to have an backup, as always)

Re: Search for given filenames and Replace them with new given filenames

When I try to rename using the Import file paths and new names option from the Export menu using a .csv file, I get this error.
Error

What it says.

Maybe post your csv list so we can point you in the right direction.

Re: Search for given filenames and Replace them with new given filenames

You might be missing the path component when importing files.

Which version of ReNamer are you using?

Recent versions have a few important improvements related to the import feature, for example:

7.3.0.3 Beta:
Resolve relative paths when importing file paths and new names from a file.
Handle errors when creating target directories during a renaming operation.
7.1.0.2 Beta:
Use RFC 4180 compliant CSV handler for importing/exporting files. Improved handling of unquoted values.
Handle errors gracefully when importing files.

Re: Search for given filenames and Replace them with new given filenames

Yep, that was it. Updated to 7.5 and it worked like a charm. One last question, right now I have to maintain two .csv files.
One that has "old names" in Column A & "new names" in Column B (I'll use this one to bulk rename from old to new names)
One that has "new names" in Column A & "old names" in Column B (I'll use this one to bulk rename from new to old names)

Is there someway to achieve both with a single .csv file?

I mean it's the same data in the just the columns have been swapped.
Can ReNamer be instructed to use the data from the columns in a left to right direction? That way just one .csv will do both the jobs.

You could store the master list in a spreadsheet file (LibreOffice Calc, MS Excel), where you can easily swap the columns around and export as CSV files on demand.

Ok, yeah that seems better than maintaining two .csv files. Thank you smile

Re: Search for given filenames and Replace them with new given filenames

This is an old thread but I'm a new user to renamer and I have the same question as the OP.  However my version is 4.65 (my firm uses a very old version) and I don't see an Export option.  Is there another way to change a list of files based on a spreadsheet or textfile I've created with the old / new names?

Version 4.65 does have some import and export options. You can find them in the Options menu above file table.

However, that version is almost 17 years old, so I would strongly recommend you to upgrade to the latest version.
