Layout of the Help menu

I remember there were few suggestions regarding the layout of the Help menu. The main two were:

  • F1 as a shortcut for Help instead of About.

  • Wiki item should be renamed to Help.

I decided to revisit this topic and mad few screenshots. Please vote, A or B, or your alternative.

ReNamer 5.50 Help Menu

5.50+ Beta 34 Help Menu
ReNamer 5.50+ Beta 34 Help Menu

Re: Layout of the Help menu

I like A better than B, but slightly modified. So how about New Help Menu C? wink

P.S. Version History looks better to me, since frankly just History looks a bit confusing.

Re: Layout of the Help menu

I have just inspected about 50 different small tools, to see how they call version history file/option. Surprisingly, very few actually have it. It is usually stored in a text file called "History" or "Changelog" or "Version". And very small number of them actually reference it from within the GUI.

"History" seemed to be the most popular name actually, so I'm leaning towards leaving it like that.

We need more opinions...

1. I tried to group the 'online' go-er together
2. That the help goes online should be mentioned, 'cus it's very surprising not to open an local file.
    Help   (Wiki)    F1
    Help   (online)    F1
3. Just 'History' is fine.
4. 'About' needs no shortcut... but i guess you want  it ;-)
5. 'Copyrights' is an button in the 'About'-dialog (or between 'History' and 'About')

Re: Layout of the Help menu

I'm for version A. Next to "Help" it's better to stand (Wiki) so newbie users could know what kind of help file is about.

Stefans thinking isn't bad... I like regrouping of on/offline content. If only there is a way to export whole Wiki into PDF (User manual)... roll

I will give mine version so...

Re: Layout of the Help menu

Personally, about the donate option, I don't like it next to the copyrights, because are credits to other people... Feels a little bit strange for me.

And the about menu is almost always the last thing.

Re: Layout of the Help menu

I like Andrew's version.
I also strongly support Stefan+eR@SeR's preference for an offline pdf manual.

Merging those ideas-
1. Once we have the offline pdf manual, we will not need a quick help at all (duplication!).
2. If each new version of ReNamer packs the latest wiki, we may not need to keep the "wiki" option in the menu.

So, the modified help menu becomes:

Help            F1               <--pdf manual
User forum
----------------------
About           Alt+F1
Version History
----------------------
Copyrights
Donate

Why:
1. People not familiar with forums will be more comfortable with "User forum".
2. About and Version history are similar in nature, so I moved them together.
3. The first four options moved together as they help us understand the product thoroughly.
The last two options are not about the product, so I have segregated them.

Re: Layout of the Help menu

I noticed in About dialog/text box, there is pop up dialog with options, when you use right click.
Does it have something with translation of that text so those options could be used or what? I see no change on click except when I click "Right to left Reading order". What is the purpose of other options?

P.S. If this question don't have relation with this topic it could be moved and created new one.

Re: Layout of the Help menu

The text area in the About dialog show the licensing terms, which can vary. The right-click menu is automatic for any text area. The main purpose for it being an ability for users to easily select and copy the content.
