Size limitations of group selection with ReNamer using SendTo shortcut

Hello,
I have noticed that, when I send a group of files or folders to ReNamer using a SendTo shortcut,
if the total number of characters in the names of the selected files/folders
exceeds a certain figure (I have got 1442 for files and 1079 for folders)
I get the error message:
"Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file.
You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

Of course there is no issue with my permissions and selecting less files/folders
so that their names amount to not more than 1442/1079 characters works just fine.

Also, directly dragging files/folders to ReNamer does not have this limitation.

Any ideas of why this happens or tips on how to work around this issue with SendTo shortcuts?

Thanks in advance for feedback,
Dario

Re: Size limitations of group selection with ReNamer using SendTo shortcut

Hi Dario,

this SendTo works like an command line: starts ReNamer.exe with all selected files as parameter.

But there is a Windows command line limit for the amount of characters for this command
Under Windows 2000, the command line is limited to 2046 characters.
Under Windows XP, 8190 characters.

Work around 1:
select fewer files at once and therefor do this two or more times.

Work around 2:
if it is possible for your habit use DOS command 'subst'  ..... or XSubst  http://www.gateway-to-hell.com/
((  Upps, this is german.  Better read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subst  ))

Work around 3:
edit the ReNamer LNK in your SendTo folder.
Modify
"C:\your path\ReNamer\ReNamer.exe" /enqueue
to
"\\?\C:\your path\ReNamer\ReNamer.exe" /enqueue

4.)
* From the WinExplorer address bar copy the path
* select a few files and SendTo ReNamer
* onces in ReNamer use "Add Files" and paste the path in the "File name"-box and press ENTER
- - - or use Add Folders - right click - Go To Folder -  paste your path

HTH in some way ?

Re: Size limitations of group selection with ReNamer using SendTo shortcut

Hi Stefan,
thanks a lot for your feedback and the tips!
Workaround 3 seemed promising
but unfortunately it didn't work for me,
I will have to use on of the other workarounds suggested by you.
And now I know what causes the limitation,
which is good, one learns something every day..
Thanks again!

Dario, you can use alternative methods for adding files/folders: Drag&Drop and Copy&Paste.

Also, wanted to confirm what Stefan has already said: Windows does have a limitation for the length of the command line.
