Samsung phone pictures missing date

Renamer does not find an EXIF date in Samsung G600 camera phone pictures so the :EXIF_Date: variable cannot be used in rename operations.

Windows XP shows 'date picture taken' as blank too.  But there is a date stored in the file which I believe is the modify date.

Exiftool.exe displays the following for the Samsung photo

ExifTool Version Number : 7.53

The Samsung is only filling in "Modify Date" and the Minolta is filling in "Date/Time Original", "Create Date" and "Modify Date".

Re: Samsung phone pictures missing date

smile  Hi Mark, welcome to the community

what do you think ReNamer should do for you?
If the pictures are tagged correctly i am sure ReNamer will get the data.
Did you ask on the Samsung forum why the EXIF date is not set correctly?

If you want Denis to help you you should provide him an sample picture taken with your phone.

Re: Samsung phone pictures missing date

I was thinking that the ReNamer software should take the dates that are present in order such as

1. Date/Time Original
2. Create Date
3. Modify Date

Then if no dates are present to finally return NULL.

I can certainly provide a sample image.  Is there a way of posting one on the forum or do you want me to upload one to a file host?

Thanks,
Mark.

Re: Samsung phone pictures missing date

As Stefan has already mentioned, your Samsung photos are tagged incorrectly, i.e. the Date/Time Original field is missing.

You can use :File_DateModified: meta tag to insert last modification date into your photos. But be careful, if you edit your photos with any image editors - they will change that date in the file.

Re: Samsung phone pictures missing date

Do you know of any software that can put the EXIF date into the Samsung photos before I use Renamer on them?

I unfortunately have a number that have had their modified date changed when copying across because I used the Samsung software rather than Windows Explorer.

Re: Samsung phone pictures missing date

Thanks.  Looks like I'm going to have to wrap some Perl Script around it.

By the way the Exiv2 tool does simple renaming and will use either timestamp

"Rename files and/or set file timestamps according to the Exif create timestamp. Uses the value of tag Exif.Photo.DateTimeOriginal or, if not present, Exif.Image.DateTime to determine the timestamp."
