Renaming files

Once the preview looks correct, clicking the Rename button or pressing F6 commits the operation.

Files are renamed exactly as shown in the New Name column — what you see is what you get.

How renaming works

When the Rename button is pressed, all marked files are renamed according to the Name and New Name columns in the Files pane. The New Path column, when visible, reflects the full destination path derived from combining the original folder path with the new name.

After renaming:

  • The Name column is updated to reflect the new filename.
  • The New Name column is cleared, since there is no longer a proposed name pending.
  • The previous names are stored internally to allow the operation to be undone.

If the results are not what you expected, the most likely cause is that the preview was not refreshed after the last rule change. This can happen in manual preview mode. Press the Preview button or F5 to update the preview before renaming again.

Renaming outcomes

Each file in the Files pane will have one of the following outcomes after a rename:

  • Renamed: The file was successfully renamed to a new name.
  • Unchanged: The new name was identical to the original, so no change was applied. The operation is still considered successful.
  • Skipped: The file was unmarked and excluded from the operation entirely.
  • Failed: An error prevented the file from being renamed. See Failed renaming for common causes and how to resolve them.

Note that even an Unchanged outcome can fail, for example if the source file no longer exists at its original path.

Undoing a rename

The most recent renaming operation can be reversed using Undo Renaming from the File menu, or by pressing Shift+Ctrl+Z. This restores the original filenames using the stored previous names, which are also visible in the Old Path column of the Files pane.

Post-rename behaviour

Several automatic actions can be configured to run after a successful rename. For example, files that were renamed can be cleared from the Files pane automatically, or the application can close. These options are available in Rename settings.
