Validation
Validation is a process that analyzes the list of files and their target destinations to identify common problems before renaming begins. When a potential problem is detected, a warning is raised so it can be resolved during the preview stage rather than resulting in a failed rename.
By default, validation runs automatically during the preview process. It can also be triggered on demand via Validate new names in the Options menu. Automatic validation can be disabled in Preview settings, which may be worth considering when processing a large number of files, as it may take a noticeable amount of time.
Users should generally eliminate all warnings before proceeding. Items that still have warnings at the time of renaming may fail to rename.
Duplicated destination paths
Two or more files in the list are set to be renamed to the same destination path, which would result in a conflict. Adjust the renaming rules or manually edit the affected new names to ensure all destination paths are unique.
New path contains forbidden characters
The new filename includes one or more characters that are not permitted in Windows file paths. Review and correct the renaming rules to avoid producing forbidden characters in the output.
New path is already taken
A file already exists at the destination path, which would cause a name conflict. See Failed Renaming for options on how to resolve this.
New path exceeds maximum length
The resulting file path would exceed the maximum length permitted by Windows. See Long paths for information on how to work around this limit.
